Feature Article - Whey Protein
I approached Qualified Personal Trainer, James Killen of
Incentive Personal Training
has given up his time to write his thoughts for Savvy Fat Burning Food, about whey protein which is often used as a bodybuilding supplement, but also is included in many weight loss shakes and supplements.
James Killen reported the following about one of the most common bodybuilding supplements, whey protein:
How well is the whey protein concentrate absorbed into the body when it is consumed within a meal replacement ?
It doesn't really alter the absorbtion of the protein at all. If the meal replacement contains some fats, this will slow down the absorbtion of the protein, but seeing as most MR's are very low in fat and relatively low in carbohydrates it makes little difference.
Protein, will however alter the absorbtion of carbohydrates by slowing down absorbtion and thus lowering the glycemic rating of the carb.
Recent research (1) published in the Journal of Nutrition this year, found that when compared with red meat, whey protein was more efficient in reducing body weight gain. If given the choice of eating red meat or consuming whey protein concentrate which would you choose ?
I could not choose just one, it depends on the timing. Red meat has its own unique amino acid profile + the addition of creatine which make it a very effective tool for lean muscle growth. It is also very filling. Its downside is that it can be expensive and is absorbed slower than whey protein.
Whey protein on the other hand is very quickly absorbed into the blood stream (a good wpc will be absorbed in 35mins) and is an absolute necessity for pre and immediate post workout nutrition.
I suppose if you are trying to lose weight you could probably live without red meat and eat chicken or fish instead, but a good protein powder cannot be replaced.
How and when should whey protein be used by someone who wants to lose weight rather than for someone who wants to be a body builder.
Whey should be used immediately after training and preferable 30 mins before training also. I make my own meal replacement with whey protein concentrate, oats and a banana first thing in the morning as the body needs something that will be absorbed quickly to lower cortisol levels, so I find that very effective.
Whey can be used at anytime in the day but try to have a wholefood meal in-between each shake.
So there you have it, one of the most popular of bodybuilding supplements, whey protein is a natural supplement that can be used safely for both weight loss and bodybuilding purposes.
