The caffeine molecule is made up of eight carbon atoms, ten hydrogen atoms, four nitrogren atoms and two oxygen atoms.
Caffeine belongs to a family of alkaloids also sometimes called Methylated Xanthines. Other compounds also belonging to this chemical family are theophylline, theobromine and paraxanthine. These compounds are chemical variations (known as metabolites) of caffeine which occur when caffeine is metabolized in the body.
