No it can't fight fat, but when you couple it with a balanced diet and exercise, it can help to encourage weight loss. It is a favorite of mine, because fruit is natures fast food. It is pre-packaged, packed with nutrition and ready to go on demand.
An apple's fiber content and it's low energy density, are the two main attributes that make it a good choice for weight loss.
Fiber in food prolongs the digestion of food and encourages stable blood-glucose levels. But what else does the fiber do ?
Yes, it makes you feel fuller for longer, because the food is in your stomach for longer, therefore decreasing the urge to be tempted by a chocolate bar and such.
There is a side benefit also that the fiber helps to detoxify the body of toxins. Toxins sometimes are left to sit inside your body making it sluggish. A lack of fiber can also lead to an increased risk of things like colon cancer and other diseases.
Eating an apple in place of other popular snacks, can be a great method of filling yourself up.
The humble 150 gram apple contains only 65 calories on average, while a so called healthy 30 gram granola or meusli bar contains anywhere from 105 to 136 calories. A bit of a difference. Both these snacks will give you energy to burn, the apple has 0.1 grams of fat, the granola bar has anywhere from 3.5 to 6 grams of fat.
So in effect the apple has less calories per gram of food, than something like a muesli bar. This is what they call low energy density foods, this occurs frequently with other fat burning fruits such as brown pears (57 calories to 100 grams of food). Our newsletter in past months has dealt with foods that have low energy densities, so feel free to subscribe to the Newsletter
Fat burning fruit such as apples are used a lot in diets which involve calorie counting because of course, they have less calories.
Another reason why apples are great for weight loss is because they contain a high amount of water. The water within the apple is absorbed by the body, which helps to keep blood-oxygenation levels high.
When this happens, your body feels ready to expend energy and burn glucose energy. When blood-oxygenation is low, your body feels sluggish and the nutrients that you do eat cannot be effectively transported to the points at which your body needs them.
So next time you feel hungry but want to go slow on the calories, pick up an apple and get munching.
