Weight loss tips for those who find it difficult to exercise

By Jenny Mathers.  Editor

Finding weight loss tips for people who are sick or injured is difficult, because in many ways the tips are going to depend on you. What injury do you have or what is wrong with you ? Maybe you hurt your back or have knee problems and this makes it difficult for you to exercise.

On a general basis, if this is you, weight loss tips will focus on what exercise you CAN do and eating to make sure that you are in energy deficit instead of energy surplus.

Because you've got an injury, it is easy to feel that exercise is not for you. However this line of thinking puts you at a disadvantage when you also desperately want to lose weight.

Exercise Is Your Friend, Get Advise From Your Doctor or Health Care Professional

If you have an injury of any kind, it is best dealt with by the appropriate specialist. If you have a back injury or weak knees for example, a physiotherapist will suggest the most appropriate therapeutic exercises to do in order to rehabilitate your injury. However while this is happening and your injury is slowly healing, you can still exercise to lose weight.

Exercise in such a way as to avoid repetitive movement or stressing the injured area. Even elderly people who experience severe muscle wasting due to aging and sedentary lifestyles can enjoy planned exercise. For example, if you have had a knee injury in the past and have weak knees - depending on the advise of your physiotherapist, you would be able to get a good cardio and upper body workout through some simple boxing routines.

So starting an exercise routine that avoids straining your weak areas will increase the amount of energy that your body is spending. This is one side of the equation. The other side, is the amount of energy that your body is consuming.

Sensible Eating Approaches Rather Than Quick Fixes

In order for weight loss to happen, you need to be in a situation of energy deficit - that is, you need to be taking in less energy than you are spending. Will this mean that you will feel hungry - yes, sometimes you will. Will this mean that you have to eat less - yes, sometimes you will.

Often people who have an injury turn to modifying their diet as the way to lose weight. This can sometimes result in a myriad of different approaches depending on their past experiences. Some people like you - looking for weight loss tips - are so confused about what diet they should be eating, that instead of eating according to their dietary needs, they end up yo-yo dieting, eating according to a weight loss fad or myth or compulsively dieting which leads to other more serious eating disorders.

Eating according to your dietary needs and with balance and variety will always put you on the winning team. Trying out short term weight loss solutions that end up costing you looks attractive because often there is no work involved. Some weight loss companies can charge upwards of $45 per week for what is essentially a weight loss shake diet plan - that's $180 per month - to purchase processed meal replacements.

I'm not saying that they don't help people lose weight. If you are excessively obese, weight loss shakes can be very beneficial. However they are not appropriate for everyone. They are a very short term option - once you stop buying the weight loss shakes, you still need to change your lifestyle in order to maintain your goal bodyweight.

Staying On The Winning Team

Taking on a healthier lifestyle including increased selective movement and a balanced, calorie controlled eating plan will mean safe and effective weight loss even if you have an injury.

Losing weight if you're injured can be an important thing to do for your body. Many people who are injured or sick get into a rut and feel that they cannot exercise. The effect of this many times is that their weight and body fat levels further increase, which has its own health risks.

So by consulting with your doctor and appropriate specialist and using these simple weight loss tips as a very broad guideline, you will be able to ensure that you are working towards or maintaining a healthy body weight.
